Parent-Child Interaction Therapy is an evidence-based modality appropriate for young children with
emotional and behavioral disorders. PCIT is effective for enhancing the quality of the parent-child
relationship and changing unhealthy parent-child interaction patterns.
Young children learn through play. Utilizing a coaching model, our clinicians work collaboratively with
parents and children in a play-based format to strengthen parent-child bonds of attachment and treat a
variety of issues, including childhood trauma, behavior problems, autism, and emotional problems.
Children learn new coping methods and become better communicators.
Advantages of play therapy include:
Developing positive parenting skills
Reducing child behavior issues (anger, aggression, defiance, etc.)
Increasing communication and interaction skills within the family
Building positive parent-child interactions
Through PCIT, children develop increased self-esteem, learn skills for anger management,
increase frustration tolerance, and improve prosocial functioning, PCIT helps children to feel
safer and calmer and communicate their needs more appropriately. Parents learn effective
techniques for behavior management and experience greater confidence in their parenting
capacity.
